1950. William Lee, an American expatriate in Mexico, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few interactions with other members of the small American community. His encounter with Eugene Allerton, a former soldier and newly arrived expatriate in the city, shows him, for the first time, that it may finally be possible to establish an intimate connection with someone.
